With over 215 buildings of which over 50 are either listed or designated as being of historic significance on 284 Hectares (700 acres) of land, 1.6 milliongross square metres (17.1 million gross square feet) of facilities, space and holdings making the University of Toronto one of the largest landowners in the Greater Toronto Area. University Planning is responsible for tri-campus master planning, visioning and planning of major capital projects and renovations, managing the development planning approvals process, and liaising with key stakeholders both internal and external to the University. UP provides direct assistance to all departments, divisions and faculties planning for capital projects, space utilization studies, divisional master plans, feasibility studies, heritage and public realm projects. The department is engaged in a range of activities that impact the physical character of the campuses through guiding the relationship of the University's buildings and open spaces. UP leads the planning for appropriate accommodation of the University's teaching, research activities, and housing needs, to be an asset in the broader urban community. The UP team plays a critical role in shaping the physical experience of the University campuses in their unique contexts.
